SEEDS’ mission is to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable living in our communities

SEEDS (Sustainable Energy Education & Development Support), is an award winning community-based 501c(3)organization in Northeastern Pennsylvania committed to developing a local renewable energy infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency and sustainable living in our region, to improve the health of our environment, our citizens and our local economy. To advance these initiatives, SEEDS offers community forums and workshops, free residential and nonprofit energy assessments, environmental education programs for children as well as a platform for sustainability information and news.

SEEDS was founded in 2008 by a group of passionate, engaged community members and in 2009, registered as an official 501c3 non-profit. The organization has done a great deal to increase the use of renewable energy in this region.

In 2009, SEEDS sponsored solar training for 60 area contractors. Several of these trainees have earned Pennsylvania Sunshine certification and two have achieved certification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Providers.

In 2010, SEEDS sponsored two “350” initiatives, installing small wind and solar renewable energy installations totaling 350 kWs.  Wayne County is now 3rd in the state in solar PV system installations per capita. SEEDS also succeeded in encouraging local residents to save 350 kW hours during that year, totaling $16,000 in region electric bills and 85 tons of CO2 kept from the atmosphere.

Our energy assessment program, now in its 6th year, hires and trains local high school students to perform assessments, accompanied by SEEDS volunteers. To date, SEEDS has assessed over 250 buildings, provided 20 student paid intern positions for local students, and saved the region tens of thousands of dollars on energy costs.

In 2014, SEEDS began an additional partnership with Habitat for Humanity’s Wayne County organization that resulted in the first solar system installed on a Habitat home in PA! We are currently working with PPL’s WRAP program to help Habitat Families and low income families achieve greater energy efficiency.

SEEDS has been helping other non-profit organizations save energy costs by performing energy assessments for non-profit facilities as well. We have been fortunate to receive funding to perform some of the work the assessments recommend. SEEDS has coordinated many volunteer work days to help these non-profits.

We are seeking individuals who wish to help our mission by donating a couple hours in the office each week, or helping us coordinate forums and workshops, fundraiser parties, or being our member/volunteer coordinator. Contact to learn more.

For its continued efforts and services, SEEDS received a 2016 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence; was named the Green Power Hero for 2011 by PennFuture, and was cited by the Northeast Pennsylvania Environmental Council with its Environmental Partnership award in October of 2011. In 2009, SEEDS received the Green Powerhouse Award from the NEPA Business Journal in 2009.
