Free Book Share is held each fall and is an incredible community event!   

2024 was the 13th year for the Book Share (formally known as the Book Swap).  There were over 45,000 books donated and over 23,000 books were rehomed.  While we did have to recycle many books, we were able to send 4 pallets of books to New Legacy Books in New Jersey.  New Legacy is a company that resells books and gives the profits back to non-profits, townships and other community organizations.

Our book success wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteers headed up by SEEDS board member Jessica Kjera. 128 volunteers gave 769 hours of their time over 5 days.  Many of the volunteers return year after year. The Book Share truly wouldn’t be a success without the support of the SEEDS board, volunteers, and community sponsors.  This year we received a monetary donation from the Eureka Foundation in Lackawanna County, and in-kind donations from Platform Industries and Rent-Event in Honesdale.  A large thank you most of all to the book loving people of the community that attend each year.  In 2025 the event will be held September 13th and 14th – stay tuned for details!

SEEDS Reads is a community outreach initiative intended to promote the joy of reading or being read to, while educating people of all ages about the importance of caretaking the natural resources that make Northeast Pennsylvania and the surrounding region truly special.

There are three facets of SEEDS Reads:

• Community Reading Program – The intention for this program is for SEEDS volunteers read to audiences ranging from children to seniors at regional libraries, senior centers, daycare facilities, nursing homes and appropriate festivals or events as a means of fostering strong community relationships and inspiring people to support the well-being of our region’s wildlife, plant life and natural resources like clean water and air.
• Little Free Libraries – We’re installing Little Free Libraries all around town, and our volunteers are keeping them filled with titles that reflect the SEEDS mission of sustainable living, energy efficiency, environmental conservation and education and personal empowerment. The above library was painted by Katharine Dodge and will be installed by SEEDS volunteers in the Central Park.
• Book Club – We have created a SEEDS Reading List and will start our book discussions by Fall 2021. In 2021 the SEEDS Reads program was partially funded by the Overlook Foundation.
