Community Solar Possibilities in PA

March 6, 2019
Take action on HB 531 today!

Are you interested in using clean, renewable solar energy but are uncomfortable with the idea of putting solar panels on your rooftop? Maybe you have no issues with solar panels, but your rooftop is not positioned well to get the full benefits of solar power. Perhaps you rent your home and can’t legally put solar panels on your roof.

There are many reasons why rooftop solar doesn’t work for everyone. In fact, the US Department of Energy estimates that nearly 50% of US households and businesses are unable to host rooftop solar generation systems.

In many states, there is an alternative to individual rooftop solar called “community solar.” Community solar is a model that provides access to the economic and environmental benefits of solar energy generation to people who are not able or willing to install solar panels on their rooftops. It allows the sharing of local solar-generation facilities by community subscribers who receive credit on their electric bills for their share of the power produced by these solar facilities.

Pennsylvania legislators are considering allowing community solar projects within the state with the proposal of House Bill 531. If you believe that the community solar option is good for Pennsylvania, we encourage you to contact your legislator and ask him/her to support House Bill 531.
